What is Zen meditation?
Zazen, or seated meditation, is the practice of bringing awareness to this moment as it is: direct, immediate experience of body, breath, and mind, as we sit quiet and still. Awareness of experience is also practiced while engaged in walking meditation, or kinhin.
As human beings, it's not unusual for us to go through life caught by thinking--judgments, worries, desires. "I don't like that" or "If that happens, I won't be able to tolerate it" or "I've got to have that, I deserve it." Often, we live our lives responding and reacting to these thoughts, completely unaware of actual experience--seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, sensing.
In meditation, we practice noticing thinking and returning to actual experience--this right-here, right-now reality.
Why practice meditation with a group?
Traditionally, meditation is practiced in a group setting because of the support and encouragement that naturally arises from being with other people.
